Contouring

Contouring is the science of representing the vertical dimension of the terrain on a two dimensional map. We can understand contouring by considering a simple example.

Let us assume that a right circular cone of base 5m diameter and vertical height 5m is standing upright on its base. Let the base be resting on a horizontal plane at zero level as shown in Figure 1.
At zero level, the outline of the cone will be a circle of 5m diameter. This circle is the contour line at 0m elevation for the cone. We draw this first contour line on paper to a convenient scale.
Let us now slice the cone at 1m height from the base. This will produce another circular outline corresponding to the diameter of the cone at 1m elevation.
Similarly, we continue to draw the outline of the cone at 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m levels on our contour map. Our contour map for the conical object is now ready. The circles on the map are called contour lines. (see figure-2)

Like the cone in our example, hills project upwards from ground level. The contour map of a hilly terrain will be similar to that of the cone, except that instead of perfect circles, the contour lines would be of irregular shapes. The important point of similarity to note here is that hilly terrain would be represented by contour lines with increasing elevation towards the centre.

In contrast to this, a pond or depression would be represented by contour lines with decreasing elevation towards the centre.

Mountain Incline Railway

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN INCLINE RAILWAY:

After the Civil War, few people made the four-hour trip up Whiteside Pike, a two-dollar toll road, to visit the peak made famous by the "Battle Above the Clouds." Then came the railroad boom, and speculators decided to develop a hotel on the mountaintop that would be serviced by a short railroad. In 1885, John T. Crass formed the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway Company and built a steam-powered incline up the steepest part of the mountain. The engineering marvel boasted an incline of 72.7% near the top, making it the world's steepest passenger railway. Today the refurbished incline is powered by two 100-hp electric motors.

Fun Fact:
When General U.S. Grant visited Lookout Mountain in 1863, it took close to four hours for him to negotiate the rough wagon road to the top by horse and carriage. Today, visitors can ride up the mountain in less than 15 minutes and take just a short walk farther to reach the same bluff where Grant stood and admired the view.

The Toshka Project

Mubarak, Egypt: The Toshka Project is an amazing attempt to convert a half million acres of desert landscape into arable land. The Mubarak Pumping Station is at the center of this effort, and will channel millions of cubic feet of water per hour. It will ultimately redirect 10% of the country’s water from the Nile and will increase the inhabitable land in Egypt by as much as 25%

TYPES OF BRICKS

TYPES OF BRICKS....!

EXTRUDED BRICKS-

Also called wire-cut, extruded bricks are made by forcing a column of clay through a series of wires to cut the shapes. The holes reduce the amount of clay used, making them cheaper, lighter and help key in the mortar bed.

COMMONS are lower quality, without special finishes, making them cheaper, and are used where they’re not visible.

FACE BRICKS are also wirecut but higher quality, with an added surface effect on one side that’s visible when laid.

PRESSED BRICKS-

DRY-PRESSED have a cork-like appearance with an indentation on the underside, called a frog, to help key in the mortar bed. Wet-pressed are very strong bricks, with a smoother, more dense surface.

SPECIAL DRY-PRESSED are shaped for specific applications including window sills, plinths or features.

SPECIAL FINISH BRICKS-

SANDSTOCK are solid and made to resemble colonial bricks. They have a double facing for single skin walls.

SLURRIED bricks have pigment added to the clay as it’s extruded to ensure the colour is permanent, giving the surface a bagged-look finish.

GPS and Agriculture

GPS and AGRICULTURE !!
The development and implementation of precision agriculture or site-specific farming has been made possible by combining the Global Positioning System (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS). These technologies enable the coupling of real-time data collection with accurate position information, leading to the efficient manipulation and analysis of large amounts of geospatial data. GPS-based applications in precision farming are being used for farm planning, field mapping, soil sampling, tractor guidance, crop scouting, variable rate applications, and yield mapping. GPS allows farmers to work during low visibility field conditions such as rain, dust, fog, and darkness.

Precision agriculture is now changing the way farmers and agribusinesses view the land from which they reap their profits. Precision agriculture is about collecting timely geospatial information on soil-plant-animal requirements and prescribing and applying site-specific treatments to increase agricultural production and protect the environment.

Crop advisors use rugged data collection devices with GPS for accurate positioning to map pest, insect, and weed infestations in the field. Pest problem areas in crops can be pinpointed and mapped for future management decisions and input recommendations. The same field data can also be used by aircraft sprayers, enabling accurate swathing of fields without use of human “flaggers” to guide them. Crop dusters equipped with GPS are able to fly accurate swaths over the field, applying chemicals only where needed, minimizing chemical drift, reducing the amount of chemicals needed, thereby benefiting the environment. GPS also allows pilots to provide farmers with accurate maps.

Kinzua Bridge

The Kinzua Bridge in McKean County in the U.S. state was originally built from iron in 1882 and was billed as the "Eighth Wonder of the World" . The idea to build what would be come the Kinzua Viaduct was the brainchild of General Thomas Kane, the Civil War hero who was a stakeholder in the New York, Lake Erie & Western Railroad. His idea was to find a way to cross the Kinzua Valley by rail versus a winding six mile route through the valley. He along with Octave Chanute, a civil engineer, agreed that a viaduct high above the Kinzua Valley would be the best choice.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous and beautiful bridges in the world because of its spectacular location, graceful lines, Art Deco detailing, and emblematic color. With towers extending 700 feet into the sky and over 100 feet beneath the bay, the bridge is also an engineering marvel. You may walk or bike the entire length of the 1.2 mile-long bridge

It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers

Residence Antilia, India

Construction has begun on residence antilia despite opposition from those who see it as an ‘excessive’ design in a city where more than 65% of the population live in slums. politics aside and after you recover from the initial shock of seeing a skyscraper that resembles an ikea cd rack, the building actually looks like it may succeed as a stunning, unique, green piece of civil engineering.
