Channel Tunnel, Strait of Dover

Channel Tunnel, Strait of Dover

Surveying undertaken in the 20 years before construction confirmed earlier speculations that a tunnel could be bored through a chalk marl stratum.Though the chalk marl stratum is conducive for tunneling but a stretch of 5 km was deprived of it.A serious risk with underwater tunnels is major water inflow due to the pressure from the sea above, under weak ground conditions. No doubt, the tunnel overcame the apprehensions with flying colours. In 1994, ASCE elected the tunnel as one of the seven modern Wonders of the World.
